Ethiopia experienced catastrophic security deterioration during 29 September–5 October 2026. Government forces captured Alamata and pushed toward Mekelle, with shelling killing at least 52 civilians and wounding 44 including 33 children. The TPLF withdrew from Mekelle on 3 October, and federal forces and Tigray Peace Force entered the city, with residents reporting looting of government offices. Ethiopia severed diplomatic ties with Eritrea on 1 October after accusing Asmara of supporting the rebel alliance, and Eritrea retaliated by cutting all relations. The UN warned humanitarian operations were severely disrupted, and MSF reported over 700 wounded in hospitals it supports in Tigray.
