Chad's humanitarian crisis deepened sharply during the week of 21–25 September 2026, as UNHCR reported a 20-fold surge in Sudanese refugees crossing into eastern Chad, with more than 400 people a day arriving via Adré and Tiné amid intensifying fighting in Darfur, Kordofan and Blue Nile. More than 55,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Chad so far this year, bringing the cumulative total since 2023 to almost 1 million, even as only 18% of the required US$1.6 billion in funding has been received. UNHCR warned that continued underfunding could force refugees into dangerous choices, including returning to active conflict zones or undertaking hazardous journeys toward Europe, marking one of the most severe humanitarian warnings of the year for Chad's eastern border region.
